Insights from a beginning teacher

I’ve been working in classrooms for almost thirty years now, and it’s difficult to remember what it was like to be a beginner. This is not to say I know that much now. There are still far too many days when I still feel like a novice, struggling to get my students to engage more deeply. What is hard to remember though, is walking into a classroom without preconceived ideas based on experience. That is why I found Helena Božić’s So, I’m a Teacher Now — 10 Reflections From the First 10 Weeks a refreshing reminder of what it’s like to start out in the teaching profession. If you’re one of my students participating in the student-teaching program, then you should read and reflect. If you’re an experienced teacher, grab a cup of coffee and transport yourself back to the past. If you’re not a teacher, take note of the care, concern, and commitment evinced in her short post, and try to appreciate just how challenging this job really is.
