  • The paper will be a five paragraph essay with an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
  • For the next class, you should have the three body paragraphs ready for peer editing and review.

Homework

The homework assignment is for both the presentation and writing classes. It is rather time intensive. I strongly (notice my use of an adverb) suggest that everyone work together on this project.

  • Based on your flowchart, you will write a one page explanation of your workflow, with the first paragraph explaining the rationale for your workflow.
  • This writing assignment will be due on December 5.
  • Print out two copies and bring them to class.
  • Email me your paper as an attachment by December 4.

    • Supporting sentences.
    • Detail and example sentences.
    • Grammar and syntax.

Homework

  • Brainstorm all the steps for reading a journal article or book. This must include every step from finding the article or book, to reading and taking notes, to safely storing your notes.
    • You can do this using an outline or a mind map. I suggest a mind map app such as Mindmup.
  • Once you have listed all the steps and their order, create a flowchart using the app of your choice. Please print out 2 copies for the November 27th class. —-

Week 5 (November 7)

  • Review with a focus on paragraph structure.
  • Peer editing.
    • Check for the following:
      • Each supporting sentence directly relates to the controlling idea.
      • Sentences are 12 words or less.
      • Grammar and syntax are correct.
      • Concrete language is used.
  • More work on supporting sentences and grammar.
  • Introduction to detail and example sentences.

Homework

  • Revise your supporting sentences based on the feedback from your classmates.
  • For each supporting sentence, write 1 detail and example sentence.
  • Print out 2 copies and bring them to class.
  • Important: Regarding Zotero, before the next Tuesday class, please make sure you have :
    • Installed Zotero on your computer.
    • Checked to make sure it is working.
    • Downloaded and nstalled the Zotfile add-on. This adds extra functions to Zotero.
    • Watched this video about adding in-text citations.
    • Read the Using the Zotero Word Plugin. You do not have to understand everything. Just read it through so that you a basic understanding of what Zotero does and how it works.
    • Taken a look at this Zotero guide. It covers aspects of Zotero using a tab-based navigation system. Please keep in mind that the screenshots are from a previous verion of Zotero so the screenshots might be different.

  • Write a paragraph that uses the topic sentence below, and has 4 supporting sentences.
    • The topic sentence should be: Graduate students need to take accurate class notes.
    • Remember that this will be a coordinate paragraph.
    • Your paragraph mush be cohesive and coherent.
    • Your 4 supporting sentences should have correct syntax and grammar.
  • Your paragraph must be checked by at least 1 classmate.
  • The writer must provide the name of the person who checked the paragraph.
  • Both the author and the checker will be issued a grade for the paragraph.
  • Print out two copies and bring them to the next class. The assignment must be printed out. Please do not submit a hand written paragraph.
